Neoclassical Revival Enamel Locket Brooch Pendant

$1,950 USD Item 11638

For the Victorians neoclassical revival jewelry was a step back in time combined with current trends of the era. Encased in an 18k yellow gold frame with a beaded gold border is a superb enamel painting of two pudgy putti. Rendered in a Mannerist or Renaissance style, one of the mischievous cherubs clutches a sprig of flowers while the other holds what appears to be a floral arrangement; wrapped in soft cloud-like blankets of blue and pink, they gaze downward from the heavens, their love radiating toward the earth-bound human beings. The colors of the enameling remain vibrant and deep.

A 17th century bow-knot design and a garland of yellow gold embellish and complete the symmetry of the piece. The reverse reveals a glass locket back, perhaps to hold a sprig of hair. A later date 14k gold brooch fittings of a pin mechanism, clasp and stem has been added for greater versatility. Moreover, a chain can be threaded through the top ribbon to hang the locket as a pendant.

Condition: Very good; one minor darkened surface scratch visible with magnification as are two tiny surface scratches; later date safety clasp and pin.

Hallmarks: Pin clasp marked 14k (later addition).

Measurements: 1-5/8 inches (4 cm) in length by 1 inch (2.5 cm) in width by 1/4 of an inch (0.5 cm) in depth. This antique brooch pendant has a weight of 12.5 grams (8.0 dwt).
