Circa 1920 Heart Locket Pendant
The heart symbol is both enigmatic and ubiquitous. Whether representing a portion of the soul of ancient Egyptians or the notion of romance, we have come to appreciate this stylized form as being synonymous with love.
Most lockets are hinged on the side. However, this circa 1920 yellow gold 9k heart has its hinge at the top. The front is decorated with embossed appliqués of palladium in the form of a quatrefoil and an abstract Art Deco papyrus design. The original bale is embossed palladium over yellow gold. The smooth surface and warm color of the yellow gold creates a great contrast with the texture and coolness of the white on white palladium. The interior reveals the original rims with plastic inserts and the space for two photos or a keepsake.
Measurements: 1-1/8 inches (2.8 cm) in length by 3/4 of an inch (1.9 cm) at the widest. When opened, it measures 1-1/2 inches (3.8 cm) in length. This heart locket has a weight of 3.9 grams (2.5 dwt).
Condition: Excellent; light overall wear commensurate with age and use.
Hallmarks: “9CT & PALL” for palladium.
Date & Origin: Circa 1920 and is English in origin.
*Note: Palladium is a lustrous silvery white metal. It is extremely rare and considered to be a precious metal often used mixed with platinum, it is unusual to find it solo in jewelry.
