Large Victorian Silver Locket Pendant

$695 USD Item 11612

The Victorian era produced “oversized” lockets to accommodate the large photographs of the day, as the technology to reduce the photo size had not as yet emerged. This late 19th century locket pendant is typical of the period.

Crafted of silver and traditionally worn during the day, the front of this oval shaped locket has an unadorned silver face appointed with a beaded border surrounded by an intricately engraved perimeter. Hinged and designed to be opened using a fingernail notch, the interior reveals two compartments for a keepsake or a photograph or two. With the original bale still intact, this pocket would look smashing suspended from a piece of velvet ribbon or the traditional wide silver chain with chased links.

Measurements: 2-9/16 inches (6.5 cm) in length by 1-9/16 inches (4 cm) in width when closed and 3-3/16 inches (8 cm) when open. This antique locket has a weight of 23 grams (14.8 dwt).

Condition: Very good; interior has some surface scratching which will not show when photograph or fabric is placed inside; glass covers now missing and replaced with plastic. Front and back are in excellent condition.

Date: Circa 1880

Overall Scale: Large and deep.
