Magnificent Georgian Pinchbeck Pair of Bracelets
Quite rare and not often seen in today’s marketplace, Pinchbeck is a metal alloy that consists of copper and zinc. Invented in the early 18th century the formula was a highly guarded secret. It was used in the 18th and into the mid 19th century as a respectable alternative to high carat gold. Many rolled gold and gold filled Victorian items are labeled Pinchbeck but are not the same. Today having the look and warmth of old gold, it is now highly collectible.
This late Georgian bracelet is one of the best examples of Pinchbeck that The Three Graces has had the good fortune to encounter. Emanating from a tradition of opulence and grandness, the piece is rather large in scale and consists of three sizeable panels florid with three-dimensional repoussé work of acanthus leaves, shells, volutes and flourishes.
The panels are yellow Pinch and the connecting points and clasps are pink Pinchbeck—typical to be used in conjunction during this era. The central panel, mounted with a large oblong beautifully faceted amethyst hued paste, is flanked by panels set with crescent moon-shaped pastes of a gorgeous aquamarine hue. Saw-tooth bezel set, the pastes are surrounded by borders of ornate repoussé decoration. Adjustable in size, neither patina nor wear makes its mark on the marvelous surface of the bracelet which will retain its shine indefinitely.
Condition: Very good; two small saw tooth bezel elements deficient; slight bend to end of one clasp; a few tiny end and one underside chip to the crescent moons and one underside chip; some patina to clasps. None of the chips is visible when worn.
Measurements: 7-3/4 inches (18.6 cm) in total length; 6-7/8 inches (17.4 cm) or less (adjustable) when worn by 2-5/16 inches (6 cm) in width.
Date & Origin: Circa 1830 - 1840 and is English in origin.
Overall Scale: Very large.
