Antique Essex Crystal Earrings of a Dog

$3,850 USD Item 11385

It is easy to see why collectors of Essex crystals have such a strong following. Miniature images, like intaglios, are carved in reverse on the flat side of a cabochon of clear quartz crystal. Hand-painted and typically backed with a thin layer of mother-of pearl or gold, these little “paintings under glass” are remarkably life-like with the produced three-dimensional effect and its concomitant depth. First seen around the mid 1800s, the Victorians quickly feel in love with these charmers.

Set within a 14k yellow gold mount with reeded border, is the profile of a sighthound, possibly a greyhound, whippet or Italian greyhound. With its sensitive, alert and intelligent presence realistically rendered through his expression, ears and eyes, the blue ribbon cum gold medal around the neck says it all.

The reverse reveals that these crystals may have started out life as cuff buttons which were converted into clip earrings. If so desired, this pair of Essex crystal earrings can be made into earrings for the pierced ear at no charge.

Condition: Very good; excellent conversion to clip earrings barely detectable even with magnification; a minute abrasion to one rock crystal and some very light surface wear visible with a loupe; reverse has a bit of patina.

Hallmarks: On the later clip earrings is “585” (for 14k) and a star that is most likely a maker's mark symbol.

Measurements: Just shy of 1 inch (2.4 cm) in diameter; the crystals are 13/16 of an inch across (2 cm) by 3/8 of an inch (0.9) in depth. These earrings have a weight of 17.9 grams (11.5 dwt).

Date: Crystals are circa 1870-1880; conversion to clip earrings in mid to later 20th century.
