Mon Petit Chien: Antique French Portrait Locket
Dating from the later part of the 19th century, this delightful oval 18k yellow gold locket is decorated with a darling enamel of a fluffy white pup. Perhaps an aristocratic Bichon Frise or a coveted Maltese or maybe that 13th century Bolognese lapdog…no matter as this well-rendered portrait has all the trappings sure to melt your heart.
Excited light brown eyes direct a loving gaze as his little reddish-pink tongue darts from his mouth. He’s all wrapped up as a blue ribbon dog on a golden background. The front of the locket is highlighted with six lustrous natural pearls set within flowerhead bezels and lovely chased gold work. In addition, the bottom section of the locket is appointed with six more of these creamy white beauties set between golden orbs. One of these serves as the clasp. Inside, the hinged locket retains its original rim and glass cover.
Hallmarks: French hallmarks on the top “O” fitting.
Condition: Good. There is medium overall wear to the gold showing with close observation or a loupe as tiny lines and scratches evenly throughout the gold; also several tiny dents and a line indention on the back cover; a tiny indention and hole in the gold at the side of one scallop. The enamel is excellent.
