Amy Sandheim Arts & Crafts Necklace
The changing of the 19th to 20th century brought with it more than just a shift in fashions. There was an overlap of both old and new style: Victorian did not fade away, Edwardian, Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau were in full flower. However, one trend did emerge — more attention was placed on the neck. Pendants, chokers and festoon necklaces became the rage.
Here we have a early 19th century hand crafted pendant. Attributed to Amy Sandheim, it is fabricated in a style reminiscent to that of the British Arts & Crafts jewelers of the day including Sybil Dunlop. This piece has a subtle combination of chrysophrase (chrysoprase) and opaline glass cabochons along with faceted rock crystal all in silver. The stones are foiled radiating additional luminescence. The rounded triangular frame is set with ovals and spheres amongst silver openwork designs of scrolls and interlaced patterns of what may be described as Celtic lines. The pendant is joined by a superb long chain composed of double link geometric figures with chain connections.
Condition: Excellent; some heavy patina on drop that we have left “as is” which can be cleaned if desired.
Measurements: Pendant is 3-1/2 inches (9.5 cm) in length by 1-3/16 inches (3 cm) at the widest. Chain is 43-1/2 inches (110.5 cm) long and each link is 3/8 of an inch (0.4 cm) in length by 3/16 of an inch (0.9 cm) in width. Together pendant and chain have a substantial weight of 57.3 grams.
Date: Circa 1915.
Important: Foiled jewelry should not be exposed to water for any extended period of time nor soaked in water or any other liquid.
