Scottish Agate & Sterling Earrings

$1,275 USD Item 11294

Scottish agate jewelry was quite popular during the mid 1800s and was designed to reflect the Isles ancestral and Celtic motifs and the influence of Queen Victoria's attachment to Scotland. Although traditional Scottish pebble jewelry used a variety of agates for the same piece, items incorporating granite (a form of agate) used only granite and not a mix of agates.

Beautifully cut pieces of grey and pink granite have been set into silver mounts hand engraved with geometric and floral designs. Crafted in one of the classic earring shapes of the mid to late 1800s, chased silver carefully follow the lines of the granite. Raised pillows of silver provide a textural and three-dimensional aspect as the articulated two element configuration allows for a sway effect with any subtle movement of the head.

Condition: Good; there are minute edge chips to granite which is typical as this is a granular material; later date silver ear wires; repair to connection point of “O” fitting of bottom drop.

Measurements: 2 inches (5 cm) in total length by 9/16 of an inch (1.3 cm) at the widest. This pair of antique earrings has a weight of 7.3 grams.

Date & Origin: Dates to 1880 and is Scottish in origin.
