Raj Dramatic in a Tiger Claw Bracelet
Here we have a spectacular example of the legendary history of metalwork of the jewelry artists of India in the guise of a natural tiger claw bracelet. High carat yellow gold gilt metal has joined twelve tiger claws in the making of a superb double claw bracelet. Dramatic in material and design, beaded borders and engraved scroll designs only serve to further its visual impact and the textural interest. This is not your average tourist souvenir by a long shot!
Condition: Very good. The front is excellent. The surface of the claws is consistent with natural striations and slight coloration changes as indigenous to the natural material. The reverse of two claws have slight defect with a bit of the topmost layers lost or discolored (see photos).
Measurements: 7-3/8 inches (18.8 cm) in length when worn by 1-1/2 inches (3.6 cm) at the widest. Will fit a wrist of 6 to 7 inches or a tad more. This antique bracelet has a weight of 44.9 grams.
Date & Origin: Circa 1870 and is most likely British Raj in origin.
Historical Notes:For the past 5000 years the art of metal work has been a rich tradition among Indian artisans. Such virtuosity has crafted items ranging from the everyday household utensil to breathtaking metal sculptures of deities. According to jewelry experts Bennett & Mascetti “the long years of trade and close ties with India created a market for jewellery produced in India or in Indian taste in the 1870s”. In addition, during this time pieces set with tiger claws decorated or mounted in engraved gold became all the rage.
