Victorian Silver Locket & Bookchain Collar
Heavy silver chains and lockets were very much the favored fashion during the Grand Period of the Victorian era. Here we have an example of a beautiful bookchain necklace paired with an august locket pendant.
The silver oval-shaped locket has been appointed with an appliqué of silver lacework with a matte-like finish that compliments the smooth and shiny surface of the locket. Hinged to open, each compartment has a silver rim which enables the insertion of two photos or piece of ephemera we hold dear. Although the construction of the applique allows a bit of “wiggle” room, it is nonetheless secure.
Bookchain, a Victorian chain style, is so-called as it consists of interlocking links of flat folded metal which resembles a book or the binding of a book. This particular chain was designed to be worn only one way with the larger orbs on the outer edge and the smaller ones on the inside. A large spring clasp suspends the locket although the chain may be worn solo or with any chosen pendant or charm.
Condition: Very good to excellent. At top of the lacework appliqué is a slight indent that is hardly noticeable. Interior shows some scratching, and Roman numerals most likely a result of initial fabrication, which will not show with a photograph or other inserts. Plastic or glass covering has been lost — we are happy to add plastic covers to both sides if so desired.
Measurements: Locket is 2-11/16 inches (6.7 cm) in length including top silver bale and 2 inches (5.2 cm) without by 1-9/16 inches (4 cm) in width. Chain is 19 inches (48.5 cm) in length by 9/16 of an inch (1.5 cm) in width. Together the weight is a hefty 72.6 grams.
Date & Origin: Circa 1870 and is most likely English in origin.
