Right on Target: Antique Eye Agate Brooch

SOLD Item 11239

Banded agates, also known as bullseye or eye agates have concentric circular bands of different colors in such a way as to resemble an eye.

Incorporated into early forms of jewelry as amulets, this unique form of chalcedony quartz also “caught the eye” of the Victorians. Circular bands of blue white, deep brown and near black create a lovely eye agate which has been almost magically transformed into a late 19th century brooch with the simple addition of charming and naively crafted gilt metal pin and fittings applied to the reverse.

Condition: Very good; pin mechanism may have been replaced or is handmade.

Measurements: 1-1/4 inches (3.3 cm) in diameter by 3/8 of an inch (0.9 cm) in depth not including pin fittings.

Date: Circa 1880 and is English or Scottish in origin.
