Tortoise Shell & Gold Pique Brooch

$985 USD Item 11199

Contrary to some beliefs, the Victorian era was astonishingly progressive in many of their ideas. Jewelry design was no exception. Such is the case with this bold use of the method of “pique” which developed in the 1700s reached its height of popularity in England by the 1860s. In this technique gold or metal is inserted into a base of tortoise shell or ivory and various designs are then configured. This very handsome pointed and geometric circular brooch has been hand wrought into a sculptural and modern design. Golden patterns are emphasized as they follow the grace and form of this antique brooch.
