Victorian Dated Heart in Hands Fede Gimmel Ring

$845 USD Item 11191

The fede ring is a motif with a heart(s) cupped within two hands. These types of rings date back to Roman times but throughout history have been popular at various times. The iconic heart cradled within hands symbolizes love, friendship and the union of souls. Fede comes from an Italian word meaning "trust". Here we have a splendid and finely rendered example with double hearts. It is inscribed and dated and, in addition, is a gimmel ring with three separate bands that combine to form one ring.

When separated, each of the three bands is engraved. One reads, "Mrs. Eliza", another "M. Truby" and the last has "Nov 27, 1881" which is most likely her wedding date. In 14k yellow gold, the three bands pivot upon a tiny pin at the back and open to reveal the full double hearts and two hands. The middle band has been engraved to add texture and depths from the side view.

Condition: Excellent.

Measurements: The ring is petite - the hearts measure 6 mm wide by 4 mm high; when closed, the entire “heart and hands” area measures 7/8 of an inch (1.2 cm) across by 3/16 of an inch (0.4 cm) at the widest. Size is US 6-3/4 (UK N; Euro 17.25, 54.25 mm) and cannot be sized due to its construction.

Date: 1881
