Victorian Whitby Jet & Diamond Ring
Looking as modern as modern can be yet dating to circa 1870, this carved Whitby jet ring is dramatic and chic. It is a statement ring that Coco would be proud to wear. A glittering old mine cut diamond (approximately .65 carats, I-J color, SI clarity) shimmers amidst a carved floral motif burst of inky black.
Reminiscent of sculptural rings from the chic designer Suzanne Belperron, the diamond is set in a collet of rose gold with a radiance brought forth by its relationship to the jet. The cut, setting and life of the gem ups the ante giving the diamond an even larger visual presence than its weight suggests.
Measurements: Just shy of 15/16 of an inch (2.4 cm) each way and rises 3/8 of an inch (2.3 cm) off the finger at the center. This antique ring has a weight of 3.5 grams (2.32 dwt).
Size: US 6 (UK L-1/4; Euro 16.5, 52 mm) and cannot be sized.
Date & Origin: Circa 1870 and is English in origin.
Note: All diamond weights, color grades and clarity are approximate since the stones were not removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting.
