Hungry as a Tiger: Antique Raj Claw Earrings
Tiger claw set jewelry engenders images of the exotic and mysterious and the Victorians had an appetite for the unusual as voracious as the source—the Bengal tiger of India. HRH Queen Victoria was proclaimed the Empress of India in 1876 and consequently a trend for all things of India became quite the rage for Victorian England.
All original, the tiger claws are adorned with gilt silver filigree work. Accented with gilt silver flowers and scroll-like designs, the earrings are articulated and suspended from a figure eight fitting attached to a shepherd’s crook ear wire appointed with a double flower surmount.
Condition: Good to very good; ear wires slightly out of round; earrings have been
re-gilded.
Measurements: 1-13/16 inches (4.6 cm) in length by 5/8 of an inch (1.6 cm) in width. This pair of antique earrings has a weight of 4.1 grams (2.6 dwt).
Date & Origin: Circa 1880 – 1890 and is British Raj or Indian in origin.
