Antique Banded Agate Pendant Locket
Agates are semi-precious gemstones that are a variegated form of chalcedony. Unlike other gems every agate is unique unto itself. Even stones cut from the same slab vary in color and design. Eye agates are especially enigmatic and hypnotic and were sometimes used as the eyes for idol statues.
During the 19th century the agate was re-introduced into jewelry. At times they were cut en cabochon so that the natural forms of the rings in the agate resembled an eye.
