Georgian Gold & Nephrite Vinaigrette
For more than 7000 years nephrite jade has been revered, venerated and idolized by the Chinese. Often crafted into amulets and objects of art, it is no wonder that this wondrous stone was exported to the British.
The often needed 18th century accessory vinaigrette has been interpreted through the eyes of Chinese artisans using high carat gold and nephrite jade. The hinged container is solid 18k yellow gold. The top is embellished with a medallion of precious nephrite carved with concentric ovals within ovals. The sides of the jewel are impressed with a crosshatch patterned surface and ornamented with solid gold appliqué of small flower motifs. The highly polished solid gold base is decorated with a three pronged fan-like ornamentation.
Opening the box reveals a gorgeous pierced and open work hinged gold screen. A leaf and stem cut-out design covers the perimeter of the solid gold screen. Fine and detailed engraving abound across the surface. Beneath the screen is the compartment to hold the traditional aromatic-soaked sponge or cotton wool.
The original red leather box with its luxurious interior of cream colored silk and dark blue velvet is itself highly collectible. The box secures with the original “C” hook and catch.
Condition: Very good; vinaigrette has one minute indention and light to medium wear on the base. Interior shows old solder on the inner rim holding in the nephrite. For its age, box is in good condition with wear to base, lid and to the interior.
Measurements: Vinaigrette is 1-7/16 inches (3.6 cm) in length by 1-1/8 inches (2.8 cm) in width by ¾ of an inch (1.9 cm) in height. Interior screen is 1-3/8 inches (3.5 cm) in length by more than 1 inch (2.6 cm) in width. Weight of 23.8 grams.
Date & Origin: Circa 1790. Most likely Chinese in origin for the British market.
