Luxurious Victorian Pair of Wide Gold Bracelets

$4,550 USD Item 11123

In the 19th century there was a tradition to wear a bracelet on each wrist. When engaged and married, a woman would be gifted one bracelet at each of these special events.

Crafted here in 14k rose gold, each bracelet has its surface embellished with taille d'epargne enamel. This is an enamel technique in which fine channels or depressions are carved into the metal and then filled with enamel. American jewelers of the 19th century, from about 1850 to 1880, used this technique quite frequently.

Not common in this type of bracelet, both are extra wide. Texture and a high polish complete the exterior design. Charmingly, each interior is engraved in flowing script with the bride's name, "Theresa Knapp".

Condition: Very good to excellent; one side has a tiny area (see photo) with a small indention and a touch of silver solder that is barely visible; tiny losses to the black enamel. A bit stiff to open and requires a finger nail directly on the catch. Neither has its original safety chain. These are easily replaced.

Measurements: Each is 1-1/6 inches (2.8 cm) in width and 1/16 of an inch (0.3 cm) in thickness. These will fit a wrist of 6-3/4 inches or less. This pair of antique bracelets has a luxurious weight of 78.7 grams.

Date & Origin: Circa 1860 and is American in origin.
