Scottish Agate Solid Rose Gold Brooch

SOLD Item 11111

Designed to reflect ancestral and Celtic motifs, this Victorian era Scottish pebble brooch incorporates richly colored stones of Montrose agate, jasper, bloodstone and agate yellow-brown in color. Typically set into silver, it is rare see it set into higher carat, let alone, solid 12k rose gold.

Impeccably crafted and traditionally designed as the circular plaid brooch used to secure the shoulder tartan, this antique brooch incorporates one of the national emblems of Scotland, the St. Andrew’s cross. The rose gold surfaces that individually frame the pebbles have superbly hand engraved patterns of various Celtic knot designs and other chased images.

Condition: Mint

Measurements: 1-7/16 inches (3.6 cm) in width; the central circular element is 15/16 of an inch (2.6 cm) wide by 7/16 of an inch (1 cm) deep. This antique brooch has a weight of 12.3 grams.

Date: Circa 1880

Historical Notes: During the mid 1800s Victorian England exhibited unbridled enthusiasm for paraphernalia and all trappings related to Scotland. Perhaps this was a result of the popularity of the writings of Sir Walter Scott which extolled an idealized image of the Scotsman or because HRS Queen Victoria acquired a castle in the Scottish Highlands. Nonetheless, “as goes the Queen, so does the commoner”.
