Late 18th c. Cruciform Brooch
Brooches of the late 18th and early 19th century can be distinguished by their flat two-dimensional form as well as the quantity of metal visible on the setting. Stones, precious or glass, were typically mounted in closed back settings, silver for clear or white stones, gold for colored gems.
Crafted from rose gold, silver and faceted glass, this late 18th century brooch corresponds to the work of the artisans of the Iberian Peninsula who incorporated faceted glass that resembled early rose cut diamonds in their jewelry. All hand made, the open work mount presents a cruciform design in gold against a stylized floral background of faceted glass stones set closed back in metal. An additional stylized flower form of four etched gold leaves with faceted glass center is superimposed upon the cross. This antique Georgian era brooch is all original including the pin mechanism.
Condition: Excellent; a bit of warping to pin stem as expected with age and use.
Measurements: More than 2 inches (5.3 cm) in height by more than 1-3/4 inches (4.7 cm) wide. This antique brooch has a weight of 17.4 grams.
Date: Circa 1780 and is possibly Spanish or Portuguese in origin.
