Victorian Sighthound: Antique Dog Fob

$1,550 USD Item 11071

The popularity of sighthounds reached its peak during the 19th century. Whether betting vast sums on the outcome of a race or coursing event sponsored by royalty or holding an Italian greyhound on the lap, Victorians were in love.

Beautifully crafted in 14k yellow gold over metal and 14k solid gold for the base, a greyhound, whippet or Italian greyhound has been masterfully modeled in a sitting position. With glass eyes the color of garnets he glances over his shoulder at the sound of his name.

Cast realistically, musculature and anatomy are unquestionably that of a sighthound. Charmingly posed with one paw lifted and his tail coyly wrapped around his leg. Slightly convex, the matrix of the fob is of a gorgeous deep reddish brown carnelian with rubbed over gold edges which make for a smooth transition from stone to metal. Medium in scale, this antique fob would make a handsome addition to the jewelry box or to the collection.

Condition: Excellent; light overall wear commensurate with age and use.

Measurements: Base is just shy of 7/8 of an inch (2.2 cm) by 5/8 of an inch (1.6 cm). This antique fob is 1-1/4 inches (3.2 cm) in height and has a weight of 15.4 grams.

Date: Circa 1880
