Crafted of solid silver, this antique bangle bracelet clearly has been strongly impacted on by Japanese-influenced motifs as well as the sporting themes of the mid to later century. Front panels have been delicately engraved with sprays of reeds, bamboo and blossoming branches conveying a subtle elegance.

Placed upon five panels are rose gold appliqués of dogs. Stacked in perfect conformation posture, stand a Dachshund, an Airedale or Fox terrier, setter, hound or other sporting dog, a German Shepherd and a West Highland White, Cairn or Scottish terrier—all with engraved details.

Hinged with a tongue and groove clasp for ease of wearing, this antique bangle sports a silver safety chain for additional security.

Condition: Front is excellent; on the back two unadorned panels are slightly indented (see photos). General wear as expected with age and use; light scratching on the exterior back.

Hallmarks: Chester; maker’s mark “S&F”; date letter “p” for 1878.

Measurements: ¾ of an inch (1.9 cm) in width and has a weight of 27.5 grams. The inner circumference is approximately 6-1/4 inches (15.8 cm).

Date & Origin: Circa 1878; English in origin of the Aesthetic Movement.

Historical Notes: The Aesthetic Movement flourished in America and England from around 1868 to 1901. Followers intended to re-establish the importance of craftsmanship in an era that was being consumed by mass production and the advent of the industrial revolution and to take a path that enabled the pursuit of beauty as art for art’s sake.
