Silver Gilt Victorian Earrings
The jewelry worn during the mid or Grand Victorian period was heavily influenced by the archaeological findings of Etruscan and Greek jewel and ornament discoveries. Victorian designers were more likely to copy these classical models rather than create new styles based on these ancient forms.
Classical antiquity is the inspiration for these Victorian antique earrings. Tier upon tier of round discs with silver gilt wire and applied wire work are accented with a raised central boss of twisted wire work. An undulating silver arch over the top of the discs adds visual interest and contrast of textures.
Condition: Very good to excellent condition; later 14k gold ear wires added.
Measurements: More than ¾ of an inch (2 cm) in diameter by ½ of an inch (1.2 cm) in thickness. This pair of antique earrings has a weight of 7 grams.
Date: Circa 1870
