Medieval Rarity: Scarce Gold Poesy Ring c. 1450

$7,800 USD Item 11000

Essentially an English tradition, a posy (poesy) ring is a simple band of gold inscribed with a saying, aphorism or thought-provoking poem.

Although often a plain band, the dating of most poesy rings is done by the design of the ring and by the style of lettering and language of the poesy. The earliest ones, as in this very scarce one, were engraved in Lombardic lettering (used during the 14th and 15th centuries) and or in an early form of modern French known as Norman. The engravings then evolved into a font of black letters or Gothic script. In the mid 16th century Roman capital letters were favored until Italic script was employed (and lasted well into the mid 18th century). At this time posey rings fell entirely from favor due to the newly enacted laws which required the use of hallmarks and thus consumed the space required for the posey.

Other characteristics, such as the tiny beaded edges evident on this antique posey ring, are also typical for the mid 15th century. The poesy reads, "have (icon for a flaming heart) and al". This translates to “have love and all”. During this time posies were frequently rather vague and not always related directly to marriage. Types of poesies also changed over time is subtle ways.

Dame Joan Evans, a famous art and jewelry historian has catalogued hundreds of poesies that have spanned the centuries.
