Georgian Memorial Urn Ring of 1767

$3,950 USD Item 10714

Remarkably intact is this 18th century memorial ring which has been beautifully crafted in high carat yellow gold and black enamel. Cushion cut and old mine diamonds dramatically accent the urn, all which appear to be original. Although the scale of this type of ring is characteristically petite, the artisanship required in its creation is anything but. Carving out of the channels for the enamel and the letters and numbers along enameling into such tiny crevices, even the stone setting is a little marvel.

The reverse of the urn reveals an unusual feature not typical — a glass covered locket compartment (with contents now lost to time) and the following engraved inscription: “Requiescat in Paxe” or “Rest in Peace”. The entire band is engraved and enameled with the words, "Ants Visc Montague Ob 23 Apr 1767 Ae 81" (For Viscount Montague who died April 23, 1767 at the age of 81).

The urn measures more than 11/16 of an inch (1.5 cm) at the widest and rises more than 1/8 of an inch (0.4 cm) from the finger. Has a weight of 3 grams. Currently a size US 5-1/4 (British J-1/2; Euro 15.75 - 16.00, 50 mm). The ring cannot be sized, as the integrity of the piece would be disturbed. In very good to excellent condition overall; minor loss of the black enamel. English in origin and dates to the 18th century.

Note: The use of black enamel indicates that the deceased was married. Rank was always respected and displayed in memorial rings of this era.

Important: This ring should not be exposed to water, cleaning products or harsh chemicals due to the foil backed gems. If considering this as an engagement ring, please keep this in mind.
