HRH Queen Victoria had a real penchant for Scotland. Consequently the citizenry of Great Britain felt the need to follow the tastes of the Queen and the 19th century became awash with all things Scottish. Ever with an eye toward trends, the jewelers of the mid-1800s began to incorporate Scottish agates or "pebbles" into their current jewelry designs.

Here is a lovely example of a Victorian antique bracelet. Most animated and upbeat, note the broad mix of different types of agates of unusually vibrant and festive colors set into silver mountings. Lucky four leaf clovers of banded agates play among squares of dark green bloodstone sporting tiny dancing red flecks and chunks of translucent red-orange cornelian and smoky orange-brown agate quartz. Subtle shades of green parry with shards of mustard and red jasper in a duel for color dominance. All brought together with maroon and grey agate bound in a silver heart padlock. Engraved with a thistle design on the reverse, this secure padlock requires no key and opens with downward pressure.

Measures 7-5/8 inches (19.4 cm) in length and more than ¾ of an inch (2 cm) in width. The heart padlock measures 1-1/2 inches (3.8 cm) in length including hasp. The heart itself measures ¾ of an inch (2 cm) by more than 5/8 of an inch (1.8 cm). The entire bracelet weighs 43 grams. In excellent condition; a tad light wear. Dates to circa 1870.
