Links to the Past: Heavy Gold Necklace Chain
An “Albert chain” is a watch or fob chain named in honor of Albert, Prince of Wales, consort to HRH Queen Victoria. Albert was enamored with wearing watch chains anchored at the center to one of the buttonholes of the vest or waistcoat and draped to one or both pockets on each side of his morning frock. Similar watch chains were worn by women; known as an “Albertina chain”, it was used more as jewelry. Today, most now serve as chic necklaces as can this one.
Beautifully rendered in 18k yellow gold, fetter (extended oval shaped) links are coupled with curb links at both ends which conclude with a 1-7/8 inch (4.7 cm) T-bar with detailing and a swivel clasp on the other. This end has a heavier fixed double oval link that is stationary and does not flex between the links. Chunky and modern in look and attitude it is also an ideal length as a necklace and works for suspending charms or fobs*.
Measures more than 16-1/4 inches (41.3 cm) in length by more than ¼ of an inch in width. The chain weighs a substantial 46.2 grams. In very good condition; light wear commensurate with age and use. Dates to circa 1925.
