Gems des Précieux: Edwardian Bar Brooch
Nothing spells Edwardian elegance and sophistication like precious gems and pearls. In a sweeping gesture of design, a simple floral spray is expressed in four (4) old mine cut and nine (9) rose cut diamonds mounted in an exquisite 18k yellow gold bar brooch. The old mine cuts (approximately .12 carats apiece) and the rose cuts (in an array of graduated sizes with an estimated weight of .15 carats) bring the total diamond weight to more than .60 carats. A creamy white 4 mm pearl with good transparency and luster crests the stem crowning it as though it were a scepter for a queen. The Edwardian age was the last major hurrah for rose cut diamonds. That cut fell out of favor as more and more brilliant cuts took hold.
Measures 3 inches (7.7 cm) in length by just less than 5/8 of an inch (1.5 cm) at the widest. It has a weight of 5.3 grams. In excellent condition; a tad bit of jeweler’s glue is evident below the pearl. Safety clasp and all the pin fittings are original to the piece. Dates to circa 1910.
Note: All diamond weights since the stones were not removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting.
