Massive Antique Brass Dog Collar
During the 19th century the flexible link dog collar was popular. However, one that is as large and massive as this one is rarely seen. Measuring 20 inches (50.8 cm) in length and 1-1/2 inches (3.8 cm) at the widest, it weighs a prodigious 187.8 grams. Made of solid brass on the Continent during the late 1800s, the collar still retains its original leash ring albeit a tad out of round.
In good condition; medium to heavy surface wear but holds a polish and shine beautifully. The reverse of each connecting link shows wear, silver solder and consequent imperfections. The collar has no clasp; it is slid over the head of the dog. Due to the nature of the construction of each link the collar does not consistently lay in a perfect line. Nonetheless, this antique dog collar is structurally sound and creates a strong visual impact. Circa 1880.
