Romantic Diamond & Ruby Victorian Ring
The early Victorian era was referred to as the Romantic Period. This antique cluster ring of natural rubies and old mine cut diamonds reaches right into the heart of that time. A striking center diamond of approximately .20 carats is surrounded by four (4) diamonds of about .10 carats each, two (2) square cut and two (2) pear or teardrop shape natural rubies. The square cut rubies are 3.3 mm by 2.5 mm and 3 mm by 2.7 mm and the teardrops measure 4.6 mm by 3 mm and 4.4 mm by 3 mm.
The rubies are a bright medium pink and contrast beautifully with the fire of the diamonds which have deep black culets. All gemstones have been set into closed back foiled bezels with tiny claws alternating with saw tooth gold. The shoulders have been adorned with classical scrolling with open gold work and the shank is reeded.
Measures more than 3/8 of an inch (1.1 cm) in width and rises more than 1/8 of an inch 0.4 cm) off the finger. Weight of 2.9 grams. Currently a US size 5-3/4 (British L; Euro 16.25, 51.5 mm). Can be sized to fit most. In very good condition; general wear as expected with age and use; a tad wear to the claws and bezels; evidence of previous old resizing visible with magnification. English in origin and dates to circa 1840 – 1850.
Note: All gem weights and color grades are approximate since the stones were not removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting.
