A Piquant Dainty for the Ear

$645 USD Item 10531

Shimmering and vibrant, each of these 9k yellow gold drop earrings holds two faceted synthetic clear white spinels. Not even classified as separate from other gems until the 19th century, a process for man-made spinels was popularized in the early 20th century. Often used during the 1920s to the 1940s, they mimic diamonds (and a more sparkling substitute for paste) while treading more softly on the pocketbook. Here the faceted gems are paired with a carved spindle of gold replete with shepherd's hook ear wire. When dangling from the ear, they shine and have a shimmer (not unlike a diamond) and have a brilliance and whiteness that might just fool most. (The photographs appear far darker in color but these are very white and clear).

Measures 1 inch (2.5 cm) in total length including a ¼ of an inch (0.7 cm) ear wire. The pair weighs 1.4 grams. Condition is excellent with little of note. Dates to circa 1930.
