Arts & Crafts Lightning Moonstone Ring
The Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th century was a reaction to the mechanized industrialization that had overtaken manufacturing. This became a crusade where the use of naturalistic material, design and technique was emphasized with a return to pride in craftsmanship and attention to detail.
With design being at the forefront, a beautiful moonstone is cut en cabochon and mounted in a 14k yellow gold finished with darkened patina in a high gallery setting. Finely crafted motifs of flowers and leaves surround the blue moonstone as landscape along the edges of a gentle country lake. With any small movement flashes of hot blue, gray and white lightning cut across the surface of the stone.
Measures more than 3/8 of an inch (1.1 cm) across and has a thickness of ¼ of an inch (0.7 cm) and a weight of 3.4 grams. The moonstone itself is 12 mm by 8 mm and rises from the finger more than ¼ of an inch (0.8 cm). Currently a size US 5-1/4 (British J-1/2; Euro 15.75 - 16.00, 50 mm) and can be sized to fit most any hand. In very good to excellent condition; light wear to gold and to surface of stone visible with magnification. Interior of band may have worn hallmarks present. Dates to circa 1890.
