Sapphire and Diamond Heart Pendant
Ever the sentimentalists, the Victorians were not at all reserved when it came to expressing emotions of friendship and love. The heart is a longstanding emblem of love.
With its lavish curves and bulbous shape this 15k yellow gold heart appears substantial yet is of hollow construction with a weight of 3 grams. Precious gemstones have been placed into a foliate motif setting—an oval faceted natural sapphire (over 3 mm by 2.5 mm) as the flower head and two (2) old mine cut diamonds (.02 carats each) represent the leaves. The royal blue of the sapphire murmurs pure love as the whiteness of the diamonds speaks of purity and innocence. At the surmount reigns a true lovers’ knot with original bale and later date “O” fitting above.
The heart pendant measures more than ½ of an inch (1.4 cm) at the widest, is 1-1/8 inches (2.8 cm) tall including the ¼ of an inch or 0.5 cm bale and is ¼ of an inch (0.5 cm) in thickness. The 14k chain, a modern addition, is 16 inches or 40.6 cm in length. Condition is excellent with nothing of note. Two tiny holes on the reverse are original as air passages when casting. Three hallmarks are incised on the reverse "15 CT". Dates to circa 1890-1900.
Note: All gemstone weights and color grades are approximate since the stones were not removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting.
