English Lavender - Amethyst Comet Brooch

$1,075 USD Item 10433

A soulful representation of one of the marvels of our far-flung universe using the resources of mother Earth - the comet brooch. Here is an early Victorian or late Georgian interpretation of Halley's comet streaking across our skies in 1836.

A natural amethyst with the color of a pale lavender flower has been faceted and mounted in an open back setting of 18k gold. Here fine cannetille work (a type of embroidery made with twisted gold threads) surrounds the faceted gem and a tail of a stem of flowers and leaves in pink and yellow gold.

Measures 1-1/2 inches in length by ¾ of an inch in width (3 cm long by 1.9 cm wide). The amethyst itself is 9/16 of an inch by ½ of an inch high (1.3 cm by 1.2 cm high). In excellent condition with several natural inclusions to the gem; feathering and a minute black inclusion on far corner edge barely visible to the naked eye. Pin stem has slight bend that can be straightened if desired. Circa 1840.
