Regal Amethyst & Pearl Georgian Ring
Since the days of antiquity purple has been the hallmark for the royal imperial standard and this antique Georgian ring clearly fits the bill. A large oval amethyst stone has been faceted to catch all available light. It has a rich deep purple color and a beautiful clarity.
Balanced and symmetrical, this regal and elegant piece of Georgian history is ringed with fourteen (14) natural seed pearls. Traditionally foiled, the amethyst is set into a closed back mount. Usually colored stones were set into gold; in this case the setting is of rose gold. The richness of the purple contrasts beautifully with the great creamy luster and translucency of the natural pearls. Neoclassical styling and design is emphasized by the use of tripartite shoulders which descend into a classically reeded band.
Measures 13/16 inches long by 11.16 inches wide for the cluster (2.1 cm long by 1.6 cm wide). The amethyst measures 7/16 by 3/8 (1.2 cm by .9 cm). Currently is a US size 5 3/4 (British L; Euro 16 1/2; 52 mm). In excellent condition; light wear commensurate with age and use; evidence of an old resizing. English in origin and dates to circa 1820. Unusual in its grander size for its time period.
