Art Deco Gold Dog Brooch
Formerly known as the Russian Wolfhound, the Borzoi is frequently employed as the mainstay of the elegant animal motifs depicted in the Art Deco period. Whether a magnificent bronze statute or at the end of a leash held by that quintessential stylized Art Deco femme fatale, this hound possesses in form and figure that dynamic geometry that virtually defines the period.
Although petite in scale at 7/8 of an inch in length by ½ of an inch tall (2 cm long by 1.3 cm high), the careful artisanship and attention to detail is apparent in this antique brooch. The long, thin head and narrow muzzle are perfectly represented in profile as he carries his tail low in a saber curve. The texture of the piece is praiseworthy in the manner in which his wavy coat has been captured. In excellent condition with original pin fittings. There is a safety ring to suspend this royal companion as a pendant or wear it on a blouse. Dates to circa 1920.
