Antique French Empire Dangle Earrings

Wafer thin and light on the ear along with a considerable length all typify early 19th century French earrings. In addition, chains or three part suspension to a lower drop were often employed. Here the use of fine square tubes of gold act as the element for suspending the lower drop. Classically inspired, these Napoleonic era earrings are set with emerald-hued pastes and natural pearls. Carried over from the 18th century was the favored configuration of three drops—two of equal length set with pearls and a longer dangle also set with paste. Visually rich, there is contrast between the languid hues of the green, the texture of the background and the scrolls and flourishes of the edges - quite Baroque in tone.

Circa 1810 – 1820, they measure 2-7/8 inches long by 15/16 of an inch wide (6.3 cm long by 2.4 cm wide). In excellent condition with later 18k gold ear wires. Wearing these Ingres could have been painting your portrait…
