Magnum Opus - Georgian Amethyst Day Night Earrings
Proportion is everything when it comes to design. In addition, master jewelers in past generations paid attention to every detail, and in particular design and proportion as well as exacting craftsmanship. Circa 1820, these are breathtaking amethyst day night earrings.
Day night within the context of earrings refers to the ability to place on or remove a bottom drop which enables them be worn day or night--more lavish or more understated. Deep hued, royal amethysts are set deep within high carat cannetille and floral motif gold work. Original back to front ear wires ensure these will not slip off. Notice the appearance of almost two tones of gold - the contrast between the spirals and the more luminous floral forms - yet in reality the same color. One reads paler and gives the surface even more visual detail.
The amethysts are medium violet with one pear shaped drop is approximately 8.30 carats and the other just under 7 carats. The two top amethysts weigh just less than 3 carats each for a total of over 21 carats. The teardrop amethysts measures 3/4 of an inch by 1/2 of an inch wide (2 cm by 1.3 cm); and the other ¾ of an inch long by 7/8 of an inch (1.9 cm by 1.2 cm). The two top amethysts measure 7/16 of an inch by 5/16 and 7/16 of an inch by just under 3/8 of an inch (1 cm by 0.9 cm; 1.1 cm by 0.9 cm).
Measures 1-7/8 inches long; 13/16 of an inch long for the top mount and wire by 3/4 of an inch wide (4.6 cm total length; 2.2 cm for the top mount and wire by 1.9 cm wide). Condition is nearly mint with one tiny repair on the back at the top point of the bottom drop. Continental in origin and circa 1820. Scarce and very fine.
