Seductive Georgian Antique Amethyst Earrings
The end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century marked social disorder and political turmoil as the news of the day. France needed resources to support her ongoing wars. No longer were the excesses of the Napoleonic courts viewed favorably. The economy was stretched to its limit and so was the availability of precious metals and gems. Ever creative, the jewelers of this period developed a style of earring that was characterized by a simple and linear design. Typical of this era and a fantastic example, wafer-thin 18k gold forms an oval surmount and the suspended medallion. Detailed gold wirework surrounds each carefully crafted plaque set with a faceted amethyst. Each section is connected with fine chains for grace and movement.
Measuring 2-1/2 inches in length including fittings, 2 inches without by 11/16 of an inch at the widest (6.4 cm, 5.1 cm long by 1.8 cm wide). This pair of antique earrings is in excellent condition.
