Victorian Silver Bookchain Collar
The Victorians were noted for launching fashion trends and the bookchain necklace is no exception to that rule. A style unique to this era and so named because each small metal panel that forms the links of the necklace has been folded over in such a manner as to resemble a book. Always double sided and characteristically ornamental, each individual rectangle has a modified cut-out diamond design and is joined to its companion by an atypically shaped link. A bale, constructed from two book links, is removable and attached using a round spring connector. Designed to hold the requisite Victorian locket, it is a versatile piece which may be worn solo as a chain, with or without the drop of two links and a pendant. Delightful from which to suspend several silver charms.
Measures 18 inches in total length, when worn 16-5/8 inches long by ½ of an inch at the widest (46 cm long by 41.8 cm by 1.3 cm wide). In very good condition. A light patina and wear underneath each pointed link beneath the books. Most likely English in origin and dates to circa 1880.
