A Poesy Ring - Me & Thee

$1,525 USD Item 10068

The ring itself is often taken for granted. Yet is it the most symbolic and historically meaningful of all forms of jewelry. Take the poesy ring - a quintessentially English tradition. What is a poesy or posie ring? A simple band of gold as a sign of eternity and eternal love most often worn and bestowed as wedding ring. However, a saying or aphorism is inscribed inside.

Dating to medieval times, they were referred to as "resons" but by the 15th century, renamed termed posie or poesy rings. Books list hundreds of their charming and thought provoking inscriptions usually engraved in old script, often with quaint spellings. Particularly popular in the 17th century and those who could afford a real gold band were quite wealthy.

Scarce now and often reproduced, they are of high carat gold. This one is inscribed, "Gods blessing be on me & thee".

Size: US 9-½ (UK T-½; Euro 19.5) with an indistinguishable hallmark.

Yellow high carat gold. Measures just under 1/8 of an inch wide (2 cm). Overall light to medium wear with one tiny scrape.
