Antique Lustrous Natural Pearl Ring
Since ancient times pearls have been prized for their beauty and magical powers. The Victorians were besotted with them. The words of Victorian gemologist George F. Kunz neatly sums up all that the pearl is: "The pearl owes nothing to man. It is absolutely a gift of nature on which man cannot improve." Long thought to bring love and richness to the wearer, five (5) natural pearls ranging in size from about 7 mm by 5 mm down to 6 mm by 4 mm are set into tight pinched collet settings of 15k gold. The tones of the pearls include two with a hint of green and purple, two with a tawny golden iridescence and one of a whiter cream. The gold shank is marvelously chased with a scroll and leaf motif and the shoulders gently taper and conclude in a delicate narrow band.
Measures 5/16 of an inch wide (a tad over 7 mm) and is currently a size US 8 or a bit more (UK P-½; Euro 18.25). Weighs 3 g. In very good condition; light wear to gold as expected with use; slight imperfection to gold at back of shank; variegated tones to the natural pearls. Most likely English; dates to circa 1840-1850. The perfect companion for afternoon tea.
