Early Diamond Baroque Pendant
It is always a joy to present an article of early jewelry. Such a joy has become an exhilaration of pure pleasure when the object is in near mint condition and is spectacular in its design and in the use of materials alongside meticulous artisanship.
Archetypal of the 17th and 18th century form of the bow and drop motif, a baroque style of bow has been incorporated into the design. Double loops on each side droop a bit towards each end as though the gold were imitating a soft and narrow ribbon. Please note how the bow coils and furls around itself as if involved in an embrace. Superb hand made construction is coupled with dynamic and expressive design so indicative of inspiration derivative of the Baroque era. Rose cut diamonds set in silver have been interspersed throughout emphasizing the harmony and shape as well as highlighting what may be seen as the almost formal perfection of the total piece. The gold rays, antique diamonds and silver setting create an extravagant feast for the eyes and admirably demonstrate a play of light and shadow miraculously translated into metal and gem. The curves and swirls add to the visually exciting richness.
Measures 1-¾ inches long at the widest (without pin stem) by 2-3/16 inches in length (4.5 cm by 5.5 cm) and has a total weight of 22 grams. In near mint condition with the stones, metalwork, bale and pin mechanism all appearing to be original to the piece. Circa 1680 - 1720 and is Spanish or Portuguese in origin. Jewelry such as this comes around very seldom if ever and is quite scarce.
Note: All diamond weights and color grades are approximate since the stones were not removed from their mounts to preserve the integrity of the setting.
